Pest Control – Moths
Moths are harmless to humans, but potentially devastating to clothes, carpets, curtains, and upholstery. Their presence in a home, rental property, or business environment should be addressed quickly by using a professional professional pest control service for moths.
At Combat Pest Solutions we routinely deal with a diverse range of flying insect pests, and we have all the the tools, training, and experience necessary to tackle an early stage or established moth infestation.
How to Tell if You Have Moths in Your House
The British Isles are home to almost two and a half thousand species of native moths. The vast majority of these are no cause for concern, and may enter and leave our homes freely without posing a risk. 4 species, however, have a tendency to feed on fabrics and fibres:
1) The common clothes moth is, as its name suggests, one of the most likely to create a problem. This species can be identified by its colour (beige/tan) or size (approximately 0.7cms/0.3 inches long).
2) The brown house moth is a slightly larger pest species – reaching 1.5cms/0.6inches in length and is coloured brown.
3) The white-shouldered house moth is between 0.5 and 1cms/0.2 and 0.4 inches in length, with pale, dappled colouration.
4) The case bearing clothes moth is approx. 0.7cms/0.3 inches in length and is coloured light brown.
The larvae may also be seen – these small, off-white caterpillars resemble large maggots. The common clothes moth and the white-shouldered house moth larvae have distinctive brown coloured heads.
It’s worth noting that the adult moths are harmless, but the larvae feed voraciously to build their bodies as they mature and prepare for their metamorphosis. They will target natural fibres including cotton, linen, wool, silk, feathers, and fur. This damage may show itself in the form of thin or threadbare patches in clothing or any soft fabrics around the home, eventually resulting in holes.
Professional Moth Treatments
Like the vast majority of pest problems, a moth infestation will only become worse if left to ‘sort itself out’! The larvae of pest species of moth can devastate the contents of a home, as well as threatening businesses such as guest houses, hotels, and hostels – not to mention premises belonging to clothes, furniture, or upholstery businesses! If you have a problem, then a professional pest control service for moths is the only effective and practical solution…
DIY products typically require many, many applications over a period of several weeks. These insecticides often kill the adult moths and larvae, but may fail to kill the eggs and pupae, which can emerge later to start the destruction anew. Luckily, our licensed pest control technicians have the experience needed to asses your situation, and recommend the best approach on a case-by-case basis.
We also have access to a diverse range of professional moth treatments with higher potency than DIY solutions, and the residual strength required to kill any larvae or moths that may go on to emerge from eggs or pupae. And you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that a professional pest control expert has performed the treatment in a way that’s safe for you and your family.
